So, I now have two new paintings finished in the build up to my future show.  I have definately taken a route towards nude/figure painting when it comes to exhibiting.  It opens up more avenues regarding composition and mood, and it will form the bulk of my exhibition.

The immediate problem that has sprung up regarding this is the task of creating reference material.  I am used to the sometimes tricky job of finding material for my portraits, but figure painting creates a slightly tougher challenge.  So much so that my latest painting is actually based upon myself.  I just don't have the time to attend life drawing sessions anymore, so I have to be a lot more creative now. Thankfully, somebody sent me some really good reference material recently that I can probably use in some way or another, but I want to move towards creating paintings from imagination as much as I can.

I plan to acheive this by sketching from a random reference picture and then creating another sketch based on the first sketch and so on.  In theory, it should have a kind of "chinese whispers" effect and after doing this a few times I should have a kind of unique reference to paint from.

With only a drawing as a reference I will be forced to paint from imagination, rather than be a slave to any kind of reference, with is an easy trap to fall into.

I am about to draw up a preliminary sketch for painting number three, so look out for my progress on twitter as i'm sure i'll be tweeting it.

Also, if anybody wants to forward any reference material my way, i'm sure i'll be able to use it in some way or another, my email is [email protected]
