The Beauty of Earth

Posted by James Flynn on November 17, 2011 at 6:25 PM Comments comments (0)

Here we are again, I have not been in the best of spirits lately, just mainly down to my occasional childish moodiness, the chaos of everyday life etc, but I think i'm going to get over it. I have finished the few paintings I had waiting around to be finished, so I have a clear path to my next piece which I think just might be another astronomy painting. Well I actually have two paintings in mind, one portrait I cant wait to get started on, and a space painting. After I post this entry I will be skimming through my many astronomy books, searching for new reference material. I often find that looking for reference material is a greater challenge than actually painting the piece, as any artist reading this will know.

Fear not, I will keep you updated of my progress over the next week or so, and you can see my latest work - "The Beauty of Earth" on my portfolio page. (I will soon be posting photos on this blog, once I get over a minor glitch on the site).

Variety

I would like to share with you a feeling which some people may be able to relate to...

As an artist, my biggest desire is to show my art to as many people as possible. Now, what I paint very much depends on what mood I am in, what is going on at that given time, or what message I am trying to convey. But a problem that artists come up against when establishing ourselves is that an artist has to have an identity, a style that everyone can recognize. Although I can see a style with my work, that is recognizable, what I actually paint, varies greatly. For example, looking through my paintings that has collected over the past few years, you would see portraits that would be considered - "happy"... this is great, these paintings portray the happy scene which I was trying to capture. However, many of my paintings I would consider to be quite "dark", with reference in particular to my most recent painting, which is almost finished, titled - entering into the realms.... . This painting conveys a pretty dark mood and atmosphere compared to some of my other work, especially some of my "nice" landscapes.

But should it matter about what kind of identity an artist tries to make, personally I am painting exactly what I want to paint, "happy", "sad", "light" or "dark", the reason I am creating it is because I want to, so, it does reflect me, the artist.

Let me know if anyone else has this kind of obstacle sometimes, and whether you think it is better to see a variety of works from an artist, instead of expecting to see a whole room full of paintings conveying just one mood.

Maybe I should include the word "variety" in the name of my exhibition....

Take care

One step further

Here I am again, I still have not got a name for my new painting, but hey there's no rush, my exhibition is not for a while. Besides, I still have about thirty paintings to frame. Oh, and I have still got to get my framing space sorted. It's still ok though, I have got a lot done lately, and still got a few paintings lined up. Space is becoming a bit of an issue, my little studio is actually getting quite cramped. I wont go on about my to do list anymore dont worry, this is another quick post really, just want to say listen out for when my solo exhibition happens, because it is going to be literally two to three years of my work, crammed into one space. Got a few months to go yet but, i'm getting quite excited already.

Once again, to see my daily sketches and drawings see me on twitter @artistjames.

Motivated

I'm feeling very motivated right now, I had two paintings in mind over the weekend and I've finished them both. One was a portrait of well known musician professor green (which I tweeted today for some feedback, but I am still waiting for a reply), the other one of my more experimental portraits. Experimental meaning less traditional, and playing around with backgrounds and different effects. Still have not thought of a name for it yet though. You can see one of my new paintings in my portfolio now though, simply titled - professor green, hope you enjoy.

I am also in the process of setting up a page so all of my work is available as a print, so keep a look out for some good deals in the coming weeks.

National Gallery

Just a quick post to let everyone know that the national gallery will be exhibiting about nine of leonardo da vinci's paintings this month and possibly up until february. I wouldn't consider myself a big art history expert, but leonardo da vinci is definately one of my favourite artists, and considered to be maybe the best painter of all time. This is a must see for me and I will be there in the next two weeks for sure.

I've just this second finished my second sketch from the newspapers today, which I do daily, and i've got another portrait to draw tonight aswell. Good times! If you would like to follow my daily drawings of news events you can follow me on twitter - @artistjames.

Brighton

I have visited brighton twice recently and I have to say, despite the ripoff prices with everything the place never fails me. You only have to drive through the town centre to see street art and murals on most alleyways and shopfronts(all are of a very high standard too) even the graffiti is of superior quality. Brighton has a very good art scene full stop, and I like the place more every time I go. To my surprise I found out that brighton art fair was on saturday when I was down so I couldn't resist paying the £6 to go in and have a look around.

I was confronted with rows of cubicles each containing work of different artists with quite a big turnout of people. I have to say the quality of work was high, I saw landscapes, portraits and abstracts all of which were great. Anyway the point in all of this is to tell you how much I appreciated Brighton this weekend and the buzzin atmosphere and good art scene there is down there, check it out and enjoy.

New obsession

Posted by James Flynn on September 17, 2011 at 3:10 PM Comments comments (0)

So many ideas come and go, some of them turn into paintings, others may not. As an artist im constantly looking for new ideas, as you will probably know most of my work consists of portraits and landscapes which I thoroughly enjoy, but a new obssesion has been taking hold of me for some time now. I have always been keen to read about space or any kind of astronomy so it is only natural that I would eventually start producing space paintings. At first this new outlet is very challenging, how do you come up with new ideas and inspiration in this field?....... A little creativity and thinking outside the box always generates fresh ideas and I have just finished a piece im very pleased with. Fear not, a new astronomy section of my site will be arriving in the not so distant future, so stay posted.

Hard work

Posted by James Flynn on September 13, 2011 at 9:15 AM Comments comments (0)

Its hard graft you know this business. Many people have a mental image of someone getting up at midday, cup of tea then painting a few canvases... yeah right. Constant work is required mostly hours on the internet, updating this or editing that, there really is a lot to it. Sorry, im moaning, this is following a recent rejection from a publisher, don't worry ill get over it. Now thats out the way I can soon start my new painting, a nice double portrait, pictures will follow soon.

Bye for now

James
